Finding My Balance

Me in side Crow Pose

I cannot say that I am an authority on balance. I look back over my life and find that balancing my lifestyle differed according to where I was in life. In my 20’s, with no husband and children, I balanced work, college, post graduate studies, and a social life. Once I married my life shifted and, I had to find a new balance. In my 30’s I birthed one child, then two and three came soon after!! NOW I REALLY HAD TO BALANCE! To be honest here, often I was unbalanced. What I have always had was a desire to be:

-active

-engaged in life and

– always at peace.

In each decade of my adulthood I really would strive for balance in my life. The 20’s found me in college where I was active as a cheerleader and dancer. After college, I taught dance classes (as well as a teacher in the public schools). I took ballet classes and joined a gym. In my 30’s I resurfaced from the new motherhood trenches and exercised more, taught more fitness classes and, found sanity when I spent time doing something for myself. That something was exercising. It helped me release which, in turn, helped me handle the ins and outs of life.

Today (in my 40’s here), I found this definition of balance in my ZEN cards by Daniel Levin

Balance

The Center is not always the point of balance. When you find that place where BALANCE is achieved, Peace will result in all situations. There is no conflict, for everything RESTS without strain.

That sums up balance for me now. That place where I have peace and I find that all is well with myself; spirit, soul and body. My sense of peace and stability change with life. It ebbs and flows and, there are days as well as seasons that I am well out of balance. Ultimately, I always come back to the center, my center. And, for me that always includes time to Sweat Everyday!

Bum Foot

19 May

I have really been remiss about a lot of things lately. With my three boys school, baseball, life schedule I have just been running tirelessly around like crazy.  Working out and eating right would be a couple of those things I am remiss about right now. I do have a “good excuse” about it though.

My dear sweet girlfriend, who is a total workout warrior, motivated me, over Spring break, with this text message: “Ran on the beach in my bikini, barefoot, and it was great”. WOW! I thought. I am going to do that too! She was in Georgia, on the coast and I was in Gulf Shores, outside of Pensacola so I figured I’d run too. I ran 2 miles barefoot however, no bikini just shorts and a top.

Gulf Shores

I felt GREAT!!!! I felt great until a day later, my foot began to hurt, it got worse, and now a month later it isn’t as bad BUT it still hurts!

Geesh! I blame it on my age. I use to heal so much faster when under the age of 40, LOL! I must say that my girlfriend is not as “old” as I am and she is a true runner. I am just making excuses now because we are both 40 and up. She even has a FB page for this 400 days Until 40, a page to encourage, uplift and motivate us to continue on our journey, defying age and stereotypes about age.

So, with my foot injury I continue to teach cycle, yoga and ZUMBA, with a good ace bandage wrap but I haven’t worked out much at all. Any pressure on my foot is not good. However I must press on and will! NO EXCUSES!

Love, Love,Love

14 Feb

Today is a day to share your love! There are so many ways to express love to your loved ones, your pets, your neighbors and most importantly yourself! If you have no one to share it with do it for yourself! Here are some ways I shared love today.

Hubby left to go out of town yesterday so I stuck a card in his bag and this morning I called to tell him to look for it. This morning, I woke up early enough to make heart pancakes for my three boys. Chocolate chip for my middle son, blueberry for my oldest, and regular ones for the baby (well he is 5, not such a baby anymore).

heart-shaped blueberry pancakes; made with fresh blueberries

I made a “love” playlist for my cycle class. We had class this morning at 9:45am and what better way to love yourself than taking a class to improve your health. This is one of my FAVORITE love songs, which I played in class:

I also gave them dark chocolate heart-shaped pieces of goodness! I have never done that before;  we all need a treat sometimes. Not all 45 took it, but some did and appreciated it. I appreciate them for working so hard. Some of my students work harder than I do and I love them for always coming back to my class and working hard with me and inspiring me to be better ( a better teacher and better with my own work out routine)!

There are great things you can do today and everyday to show love. Today, I have a friend who is going to write a letter to God, and express her love for Him! WOW! I think that is beautiful. SO, see today need not be a downer day. Give love, give it to a friend, a neighbor, your family, yourself. No greater gift is there that love. As Stevie says:

“Did you know true love asks for nothing?

Her acceptance is the way we pay.

Did you know that life is giving love again

To last forever, another day?”

Just Dance – love/peace/soul

6 Oct

Every Thursday I teach a Latin Fusion class. I LOVE my class. We have a BLAST every week. Me and usually 50-60+ students are grooving away.

Me on stage teaching a class

I have been teaching this particular class for about four years now. I love listening and choosing the music, I love choreographing the dances, and I love dancing.

That’s it! I LOVE TO DANCE. I have been dancing all of my life. Started out as a ballet dancer as a 5 year old and went on to college to dance, now I do it as an adult. It has always been the essence of who I am. No matter how tired I am, I get in there and something just takes over and I am a dancing machine. I forget about anything else going on and I am moving and grooving, yelling, throwing my hands up in the air and just going for it. It is such a relief.  I forget I am a wife, mother of three with dishes to do, laundry, housecleaning, errands, bills, pick-ups, practices, the list goes on and on. I forget that sadness of those who died, and the ails of  our country and world. I embrace the thing that connects all life music and dance.

What makes it even better is that I sweat like crazy and burn at least 500 calories each week. How sweet is that. Right afterwards I teach yoga and that completely calms me down. I just love Thursdays.

What do you like to do to relieve stress? Have you danced lately?

Doesn’t take much to Do it – getting in a little workout for you – push-ups and downward dogs

22 Jan

It doesn’t take much to stay fit. That is what I always say! “Hmph!” That is also what I say. Where do you find the time? After chasing three boys around the house, carting them all around town, attempting to “do you”, and manage a household, plus a little working (did I mention I’m suppose to be a SAHM), and then being a wife, lover, friend. Where does one find the time? I don’t, often I crash, around midnight, only to wake up again to the sound of children rustling through the pantry and the day starts again. Time….where are you?

Well, this morning I found the time. Woke up at 6:30am (yes, unfortunately, it’s Saturday), to the sound of hubby’s alarm (he has nowhere to be and doesn’t even hear it let alone wake up to it-that is another blog…lol), I go and see about the 10-year-old who has been awake since 5am (why son?!). He needs comfort and help with his sore throat. I pray – “Hey God it’s me”…”I know I’ve been slacking”…”I LOVE YOU, Amen”! I go online – loving social media. I buy tickets to Blue Man Group (9 year olds favorite group). Anyway, I “do” everything but what about my fitness? Aha! Push-ups…drop do 10 get back into whatever it is I’m doing. Ten, okay 20 minutes pass drop another 10, a few downwards dogs and I’m feeling good. Hey, another 15 minutes goes by…why not another 10 push-ups and some downward dogs plus a plank. Hold on gotta drop and do 15…Okay I’m back. you see another 15, a few more yoga asanas, a plank and my heart rate is up, I feel a tingle in the arms and chest. I’m on it!

You see it doesn’t take much, often times there is no prescription. Yes, there are better ways to really formalize your fitness program in order to maximize the benefits but you just gotta get it in! Start there, do what you can and you’ll build it up. I’m starting there. I know I may not count because I teach group fitness and I am a little more self-motivated but not all the time. Trust me on this!

Peace to you and let your time count. Let me know how you are doing. I’d love to cheer you on! Oh-oh…I gotta drop and do 10!
